چکیده

1 Motivation Walking with traditional passive lower-limb prostheses requires additional muscular effort and increased metabolic consumption (1.3-2.5 times the energy expended by a healthy person [1]). This supplementary effort cannot be sustained by many geriatric and dysvascular amputees (the majority of the amputee population [2]) for more than few steps, resulting in a partial or total reduction of the walking ability [3]. To overcome this problem, we need lightweight powered prostheses able to inject controlled amounts of positive energy into the walking cycle in order to improve gait efficiency and increase the independent life of a large number of amputees.

Optimization of Ankle-Foot Prosthesis with Active Alignment by Passive Elements

Today, often ankle’s active prosthesis is used for transtibial amputated people’s walking, because these prostheses have some advantages such as increasing power and decreasing metabolism. In most of active prosthesis in order to create a movement or increase the force at the push-off, electrical actuators are used like a motor. In cases where a higher-power motor is necessary, the capacity, we...

Impact of Powered Knee-Ankle Prosthesis on Low Back Muscle Mechanics in Transfemoral Amputees: A Case Series

Regular use of prostheses is critical for individuals with lower limb amputations to achieve everyday mobility, maintain physical and physiological health, and achieve a better quality of life. Use of prostheses is influenced by numerous factors, with prosthetic design playing a critical role in facilitating mobility for an amputee. Thus, prostheses design can either promote biomechanically eff...

Towards active lower limb prosthetic systems: design issues and solutions

Background A prosthesis is a crucial technical substitute that should restore biomechanical function and body integrity for people with lower limb loss or congenital limb absence [1]. Within the last decades, lower limb prostheses developed from passive mechanisms to adaptive mechatronic systems [2]. Contemporary, such prostheses evolve to robotic systems providing powered locomotion support by...

The effect of NDT and BTX-A injection on muscle spasticity

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of neuro-development treatment (NDT) technique and NDT plus botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injection on the reduction of spasticity and improvement of the quality of movement patterns of lower limb in hemiplegic patients. For this purpose, 15 hemiplegic (8 female and 7 male cases) with an age range of 27-70 years participated in this study. The pa...
